DeSantis’ Budget Aims to Improve Transportation and Boost Economy

Governor Ron DeSantis has signed the Focus on Florida’s Future Budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, which allocates a record $15.5 billion to enhance Florida’s transportation infrastructure. Unlike many states, only 24% of Florida’s transportation budget relies on federal funding.
The budget includes $14.5 billion for the State Transportation Work Program, a five-year plan addressing 946 construction projects and other priorities. Key investments are:
- $5.2 billion for highway maintenance and 140 new lane miles
- $1.8 billion for resurfacing 3,128 lane miles
- $960.6 million for freight, rail, and community transportation
- $382.5 million for bridge repairs and replacements
- $334.2 million for aviation
- $215.3 million for trails, including $50 million for the SUN Trail Network
- $210.1 million for safety enhancements
- $182.2 million for rural infrastructure
- $109.6 million for seaport improvements
Governor DeSantis’ budget focuses on reducing congestion, expediting supply chain movement, and avoiding politicization of transportation funding. Recent legislative measures include:
- Public meeting and voting requirements for planning agencies reducing travel lanes
- Withholding funds from entities breaching COVID-19 travel mandates
- Withholding funds from transit providers misusing state funds for social, political, or ideological purposes
- Ensuring state transportation planning remains financially focused
