PES Joins the Million Orchid Project to Cultivate Biodiversity in South Florida

Published Date: November 7, 2023

Polikar Engineering Solutions (PES) is thrilled to announce its involvement in a groundbreaking initiative right in the heart of South Florida – the Million Orchid Project (MOP) at the Fairchild Botanical Garden in Coral Gables. This extraordinary endeavor represents a significant leap forward in conservation efforts, aiming to reintroduce native orchid populations and foster biodiversity in the region.

The Million Orchid Project is a testament to the power of community collaboration and environmental stewardship. Stemming from the overexploitation of orchids in the late 1800s, which led to a decline in native orchid populations, MOP seeks to reverse this trend by reestablishing one million native orchid plants across South Florida. Beyond sheer numbers, the project is a holistic approach to ecosystem restoration and the preservation of delicate flora.

PES is proud to be at the forefront of this vital project, entrusted with the analysis and design of the retrofitted structure that will serve as the nurturing habitat for these precious orchid propagations. Our team’s expertise will ensure that the environment is conducive to the growth and thriving of these delicate specimens, contributing to the success of the overall conservation efforts.

The Million Orchid Project is not just about planting orchids; it’s a multifaceted endeavor that engages over 20 community partners and more than 100 schools. Together, they are employing cutting-edge micro-propagation techniques, including The STEMLab – Fairchild’s innovative mobile micro-propagation laboratory housed within a decommissioned school bus. This unique approach brings science directly into classrooms and neighborhoods, inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

At its core, the project is a vast science experiment, unveiling the mysteries of how native orchids flourish, reproduce, and adapt within an urban landscape. It offers hope for the future of these delicate treasures, demonstrating that with concerted effort and innovative solutions, we can rescue rare plants and revitalize urban ecosystems.
