Reconstruction of FIU Pedestrian Bridge Set to Begin in October

Six years after the tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University (FIU) that claimed the lives of six people, including student Alexa Duran, the long-awaited reconstruction is finally set to begin. FIU has confirmed that construction for the new bridge will commence on October 8, 2024, after several delays in the process.

FIU’s Associate Vice President of Media Relations, Maydel Santana, expressed the institution’s dedication to moving forward, despite the setbacks. Initially, construction was planned to begin earlier in 2024, but the process was delayed due to a lengthy competitive bidding process and the need to secure an additional $2 million. These funds, according to FIU, are being sourced from auxiliary funds rather than tuition fees.

Santana reflected on the somber impact of the collapse, saying, “The day of the collapse was one of the saddest days in FIU history that remains in our hearts and minds permanently.” She also emphasized the increased necessity for the bridge as FIU has seen significant growth in student housing developments in the surrounding area, making the safe crossing of Southwest 8th Street even more critical.

The new bridge will feature multiple structural redundancies to ensure pedestrian safety, with road closures expected during construction hours. BBC Engineering, which employs FIU graduates, has been selected as the design engineer for the bridge, while DeMoya Highway Infrastructure, a firm with experience in projects like the Palmetto Expressway and emergency repairs from Hurricane Ian, will serve as the builder. The reconstruction will also involve the removal of the remaining pylon opposite FIU to make way for the new structure.

To keep the community informed and involved, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will hold a pre-construction conference on September 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the FDOT District Six Auditorium in Miami. Following this, there will be a public meeting on September 19, 2024, at Jorge Ronselli Park in Sweetwater at 6:30 p.m., where FDOT will present details on safety measures, maintenance of traffic components, and the construction timeline. Members of the community are encouraged to attend both meetings.

FIU President Kenneth Jessell, who was the university’s CFO during the collapse, has remained involved in the bridge’s reconstruction. Jessell confirmed in a statement released on September 17, 2024, that construction would begin on October 8 and is expected to last two years. He encouraged the FIU community to stay informed throughout the process.

During the construction period, detours and closures will affect traffic at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC). Jessell assured the community that FIU will coordinate closely with FDOT to provide regular updates, and most detours and closures will occur during evening hours to minimize disruption.

Jessell concluded by stressing that the new bridge will not only serve as a safe crossing for pedestrians but also stand as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the original collapse.
